  • Come and join us on Friday on Kincumber Mountain for the April edition of BRACKETS AND JAM...music, entertainment, good vibes and fantastic food overlooking beautiful Brisbane Water. We will again be featuring some more fantastic performers and another lovely selection of meals served by our hardworking kitchen volunteers. Bring a friend, a smile, a blanket or a chair to sit on and a torch to light your way and treat yourself to what has to be the cheapest and best night out on the Coast.

Among artists featured this month are:

SUSIE PALMER:Bringing us an accompanied selection of her poetry.

mirrabookaMIRABOOKA:Mirrabooka is the marriage between two dynamic smaller bands and good friends "Hit N Miss" and "Out Of The Blue" and together these two smaller bands form a remarkable five-piece band of experienced musicians and their fans are absolutely delighted.

Mirrabooka are seasoned musicians and have been involved in the music industry for over 25 years. Combine all this talent, the musicians, the original compositions, three lead vocalists, delicious vocal harmonies, amazing flute solo's, organic grooves, with a unique original sound of beautiful acoustic music made up with acoustic guitars, mandolins, ukulele s, djembe drums, and bass, then thrown in some very catchy covers, you have Mirrabooka.

FIRST DRUM JAM: Bring your dancing feet, drum, rattle or whatever and join in our famous and frantic jam.

jesselockeJESS LOCKE: Over the last two years or so, Jess has played both support and headline gigs at festivals and renowned venues in Sydney such as The Hopetoun and Sandringham Hotels and The Basement where she launched her EP in October.

Jess’ growing live set brims with subtle, resilient melodies, and savvy, considered lyrics. They not only drive, but are also suggested by, the vocal melodies. Her songs are crafted like poems, little machines of intelligence, love, melancholy desire and concision. While drawing on influences from well-known artists like Leonard Cohen, Elliott Smith and Cat Power, Jess has developed her own assured and confident voice that takes these artists’ work as a point of departure rather than an ideal to be achieved. She’s very much her own artist.

FINAL DRUM JAM: Stay late and see the evening out with the spirit of the dance and drum! Enjoy a little more space to dance to the powerful beat of the drum.

  • The festival will feature a host of international and local drumming performances. Also Gypsy markets, Youth Arts Markets, belly dances and featuring the BATTLE OF THE DRUMS kit drumming elimination competition.

  • Introduction

Once again I take great pleasure in stating that Brackets & Jam Central Coast Inc. has had a good year with positive outcomes for the Central Coast community as well as for the organisation. It has not been a smooth ride with a high level of administration being required to support the continuous increase in activity undertaken in the past year including the cessation of our Newcastle activities, the interest shown in replicating Brackets in Victoria and the highest yet level of activity in other community events across the region.

Come and shake a leg with us up on the Mountain on Friday 20th August an evening of pre election dullness. Our manifesto is as always: Good music, good food, good company and good times. We will again be featuring some more fantastic performers and another lovely selection of meals served by ou...r hardworking kitchen volunteers. from-willowThis month we are featuring some fine acts from around the country:

FROM WILLOW: > From Willow was formed in 2009 over a coffee, a jam session and a passion for creative expression.
This new acoustic group from the Central Coast and Sydney has created a fusion of musical ideas to produce an earthy and raw mix of music that evokes nostalgic images of time and life.
Folk melodies and harmonies surround a guitar and percussion driven sound. Reflections of the soul are slowly revealed through rhythmic tone colours.
Founding members Bec O'Hare and Louise Donnelly will be joined by special guests Rod Hollier on guitar/percussion, Hudson Wallace on guitar/percussionand Glen Donnelly on Viola.

    http://www.myspace.com/fromwillow

DaveLeanDAVID LEAN: Dave is a local singer / songwriter who has recently performed at the Avoca Theater showcase. It will be his first appearance at Brackets so please be sure to give him a warm welcome.

I am Jave on the Acoustic Guitar, i am the musical mystery far beyond where any Scooby-doo crew has ever gone before. My music will warm up the coldest parts of your body, share the rhythmic beat of your heart, the tempo you tap with your feet and the light that you see in your vision. It will allow you to sit back and enjoy, stand up and sway or get up and dance. Its cruisy and catchy, meaningful and meaningless, instrumental and lyrical and always fun and unforgotton. I am a musical friend, and a guy that thinks of everything in song.

    myspace.com/thatjaveguy

FIRST DRUM JAM: Bring your dancing feet, drum, rattle or whatever and join in our famous and frantic jam.

rubixcubaRUBIX CUBA: This will be good!!! You might have caught these guys a few years ago at Coastfest. Tonight we welcome them to B&J as part of their “Government Approved tour” I wonder who approves more, Julia or Tony?

Rubix Cuba: an 80's commercial fad crossed with a communist stalwart. A contradiction. Ska for pop fans, pop for ska fans and so much more!

Whilst appearing happy on the outside and in their music, Rubix Cuba are a deep and melancholy band (not that you'd guess it) with songs from the heart...which they wear on their shirtsleeves!! The Rubix Cubans bring a ball of energy to any stage and are bouncy, photogenic and annoyingly catchy.

Rubix Cuba draws influences from a variety sources including ska, rock, funk, punk, swing, jazz, Latin and Cuban. This makes the band a musical feast for listeners and a visual carnival for gig goers.

The band explodes in a ball of energy on stage (most days) so check out a show near you...and see a giant dancing rubiks cube in the flesh...CUBIE!!!!

  • Friday 26 February - Kincumba Mountain

Well, last month was a great way to start off a New Year! Great music, great food and lots of great people. Why not join us again on Friday February 26th on Kincumber Mountain for another fabulous night of music, entertainment, good vibes and fantastic food overlooking beautiful Brisbane Water. We will again be featuring some more fantastic performers and another lovely selection of meals served by our hardworking kitchen volunteers. Bring a friend, a smile, a blanket or a chair to sit on and a torch to light your way and treat yourself to what has to be the cheapest and best night out on the Coast.

This month we are featuring some fine acts from around the country:

thumb_michael-peterMICHEAL PETER: Michael Peter is a Central Coast singer songwriter. His songs mix heart-felt vocals and unique and thoughtful storytelling with a blend of folk, roots, soul, pop and rock it’s a truly unique sound that is hard to pigeonhole and a pleasure to listen to.

Michael’s earlier EP releases have received airplay on Triple J, Nova and ABC radio. His live show has toured nationally playing festivals, café’s and pubs as well as supporting legendary acts including Billy Thorpe and Daryl Braithwaite. His brand new debut album “Something along those lines” is now available in stores and through I-tunes.

“An earnest, raw, promising new artist… there is a sincerity and honesty in Peter’s lyrics that shouldn’t be ignored” - The Sunday Telegraph

"Michael’s music is the kind that truly connects with you [music] to drive to, smile to, sing along in front of the mirror to." - Rip it Up

thumb_sangeet600SANGEET AND FRIENDS: We are very lucky tonight to be able to present, once again, a true travelling master of his craft. Those lucky enough to have witnessed a performance by Sangeet will testify to his virtuoso mastery of the classical Indian sitar. Sangeet travels the country performing and has, in the past, been a crucial part of several recordings by popular exponent of New Age, Healing, World, Fusion music, Tarshito from the Northern Rivers area of NSW. Sangeet’s music is the ideal accompaniment for a summer evening on the mountain.

thumb_homelessyellowHOMELESS YELLOW:All the way from Brisbane, we are very happy to welcome back Homeless Yellow. The music from Homeless Yellow is laid back and relaxed. Just the perfect thing to accompany a duster late-fall day, here in Berlin, where outside it was just a wet-snow mess. Early evenings are just the right thing for this kind of music. Just the right thing for relaxing after a stressed day.

Homeless Yellow sound like a laid back acoustic Gregg Allman or Neil Young, or possibly Kurt Cobain from Nirvana, with emotive vocals, and rhythmic guitar. I especially liked Asian Oranges. If you’re one of the many who like Nirvana, you would be doing yourself a favor to give Homeless Yellow a listen.GARY LEVINSON -- indie music review

King Tide formed out of Thursday night jams on the floor of Bondi’s Beach Road Hotel just 5 years ago. Ever since, they have wowed festival audiences with their live performances, blending dub, reggae, ska, roots and dancehall seamlessly into fun, energetic sets for the whole family. Chill out on the grass or dance the late afternoon away as evening approaches.

King Tide have crystallized their niche in the music world, starting out as a collective jam band and progressing to a fully-fledged, slickly-packaged reggae powerhouse that are taking the festival circuits by storm. What could uncreatively be described as ³Byron Bay music² is a potent and vibed-out blend of Marley-esque sunny ska, 70¹s soul and a very Australian melodic pop sensibility.  Tony Hughes¹ squeezed, husky vocals are the centrepiece of the ensemble, his flambouyant posturing and socially attuned lyrics speak to us like the voice of a weedy pastor, revelling in the immense gospel sounds created by the band. This being their fourth album, it¹s a detailed and glossy affair  produced by the three mainmen Hughes, Paul Snatch and Ross Fotheringham themselves, they seem happy in the kaledoscopic blend they¹ve concocted.  These guys know they¹re onto a good thing, and their buzzing fanbase should keep them afloat for a long time, continually wooed by their overtly positive mantras;  ³we got everything we need in the palm of our hands, we just got to keep on lovin¹.²

FIRST DRUM JAM: Bring your dancing feet, drum, rattle or whatever and join in our famous and frantic jam.

SunPilots1The Sun Pilots: Original Indie Rock 4 peice from Sydney featuring Raj Siva-Rajah - Vocals,  Bob Spencer - Guitar,  Justin Kool - Bass Andy Nielsen - Drums

The Sunpilots’ released their debut album Living Receiver late last year, earning the band an ‘Indie Album of the Year’ and two ‘Indie Album of the Week’ awards from music press. Described by one journalist as “poetic rock with the energy of Pearl Jam and the dark undertone of Radiohead”, tracks from Living Receiver have aired on radio (Triple J, FBi, RRR, PBS, 4ZzZ and RTR) and TV (Rage, Channel V, Video Hits) around the country.

This laid the foundation for three Australian tours, an iTunes Single of the Week and a MusicOz Producer’s Award. The Sunpilots have also begun turning heads overseas, with several tracks being picked up by college radio in North America. The resulting buzz has led to a Best International Artist award at the Toronto Independent Music Awards and an International Songwriting Competition and LA Music Awards nomination.

In April this year, the boys headed into the studio and began writing and demoing for album no. 2. According to frontman Raj Siva-Rajah, “we’ve really started to figure out exactly what “our sound” is – and it’s evolved a fair bit from Living Receiver. The new tracks take more of a cue from bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, radiohead, Incubus...”

The Sunpilots are taking a short break from writing in October / November for their 2009 Animals In My Mind Australian tour - which will give fans a preview of several new tracks from the yet unnamed sophomore album. Then it’s on to Asia for a run of festival dates, followed by Europe for some extended international touring.

"If soaring rock adheres to your taste, then The Sunpilots will appear as something of a revelation to you. With their debut album Living Receiver, the Sydney quartet has delivered a solid album fit for stadiums. INDIE ALBUM OF THE WEEK.” The Brag, Sydney

"Poetic rock with the energy of Pearl Jam and the dark undertone of Radiohead..." Soundscape Magazine, USA

"A beautifully crafted rock album - 4 stars.” Reverb Magazine, Newcastle

"The Sunpilots could sway stadium crowds if their stagecraft is any match for their strong musical sense of drama and dynamics. There's certainly enough passion in singer Raj Siva-Rajah's delivery, particularly in the psychodrama of Medicated Shell." The Drum Media, AUS

"The Sunpilots sent shivers down my spine." Musikmantra, UK

    GilbertWhyte-900Gilbert Whyte

After the independent release of several acoustic albums in Western Australia, Gilbert Whyte has now arrived in New South Wales to emerge as a singer songwriter in the east coast music scene. The Scottish born musician has a fingerpicking guitar style derived from older style influences, such as Woody Guthrie, Nick Drake and Townes Van Zandt. As a prolific songwriter, Gilbert's back catalogue is a testament to his ability to draw inspiration from almost anything. Always the rambler when playing live, Gilbert loves to talk with his audience. His lengthy rants and rambles on life have come to characterise his cheerful performance style. Now playing regularly between Sydney and Newcastle to promote his 2009 album “Solo”, Gilbert Whyte is quickly earning a reputation for musicianship and heartfelt performance.

    Azadoota_900Azadoota

Representing a tiny nation with a huge sound, Azadoota infuses Assyrian party music with Latin, African and Eastern European flavours.

Azadoota is the creation of Assyrian singer/songwriter Robin Zirwanda. Robin was born in Baghdad, Iraq, where his father was a popular guitarist and singer. Growing up in a house full of music, Robin was destined to be a musician, but despite his father's best efforts to teach him guitar, Robin's passion was the drums. After migrating to Australia, Robin spent the early part of his career as a drummer and percussionist. In 1986, Robin toured with "American Pie" legend Don McLean, an experience that left him with a lasting impression. Robin describes how during the tour, enjoying lobster and caviar backstage, he asked Don McLean what it took to achieve such a high level of success in the music industry. Don replied, "You have to gamble on yourself, Robin". With those words echoing in his head, Robin started writing songs in his native language, Assyrian, and eventually Azadoota was born.

Showcasing a diverse multi-ethnic line-up, Azadoota is a true hybrid of contemporary musical cultures, owing as much to Western pop as it does to its more exotic influences. In 2008 Azadoota released their first commercial album. Created with the goal of making music that breaks through cultural barriers, they named the album "Planetarian". The album received airplay on Triple J and Radio National, as well as on many local and community radio stations. And proving that music really does transcend borders, the album has been featured on radio shows as far as Sweden, Israel, Spain, the Netherlands and the Ukraine. After releasing the album, Azadoota was selected as a Top Ten finalist in the inaugural World of Music Awards. An international competition with a global panel of judges that reads like a who's who of World Music, the awards were billed as the most culturally diverse, multi-lingual music event in the world.

"Azadoota in Assyrian means Freedom," says Robin, "and our band stands for freedom from cultural and ethnic prejudice. We sincerely thank the Australian people who have welcomed us here as migrants and embraced our music, allowing us to share a piece of our culture with them".

raymizzi180Ray Mizzi:We are very pleased to present to you tonight a member of the original B&J organization from its early days in Sydney. After completing music studies in 1993, Central Coast Music was originally founded by Ray Mizzi in 1995 as ArtiChoke Music, a locally based outfit that performed in and around Sydney. From 1995 to 1998 Ray was the coordinator of Brackets and Jam, later in Alice Springs in 2005 with wife, Gabrielle, and baby daughter, Mia, went on to establish Jamnesia, a very successful performance night.
He continues to develop as a vocalist / pianist and composer, with a wide range of musical styles, and a very broad range of songs through music history in almost any style. While at the same time being able to compose and record using state of the art technology and formal conservatory training obtained in 1993 in Newcastle. In June of 2008 Ray achieved top 20 in roots division on JJJ for his original piano Rockabilly piece, Don't Go Out Tonight.

With a flexible range of styles, Ray offers convincing performances with a well developed lyric voice at his best in jazz croon or Motown scat, operatic aria or popular ballad.

Paul Eagle:Just back from Western Australia, Central Coast musician, Paul Eagle has an incredible natural ability for writing songs which will not only captivate you but will inspire you mentally and spiritually. FIRST DRUM JAM:Bring your dancing feet, drum, rattle or whatever and join in our famous and frantic jam.

gen-little-320Genevieve Little and Adrian Kyneur:A soulful musical style with inflections of jazz and alt-folk across an eclectic repertoire, Gen presents a voice that commands attention with its unique blend of strength and fragility.

A musician from the age of six, performing artist from the age of eight, songwriter at fifteen and amateur producer following shortly thereafter, there is at least one place Genevieve will always have a strong standing- and that is in the music industry.

Performing regularly both nationally and internationally for a number of years, Little has been challenging the strengths of her songwriting by diversifying her experiences and exposure to audiences across the globe. In 2007 she completed a world tour through North America and Europe, performing in venues across ten different countries including New York's infamous Crash Mansion and The Bitter End, and Paris's Australian Embassy.

Upon return and through 2008 Little embarked on a National Australian tour supporting Mushroom Music's Blanche DuBois through Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide, and many smaller scale tours. Having supported a number of international artists such as Kasey Chambers, Deni Hines, Christine Anu, Diesl, Tyler Hilton, Wendy Matthews and Chaka Kahn, this beach-born songstress continues to secure her position in the music industry by complementing her passion for composing and performing by pursuing a professional place the producer's seat. Currently completing a Master's degree in Audio Production and having just returned from a year abroad in the United State's musically prosperous city of San Francisco, Little let's nothing stand in her way of her passion for sound.

Gen is joined tonight by a familiar face from the Coast, Adrian Kyneur. You will have seen Adrian playing his cool percussion in various guises over the years. Tonight the rhythmic beat of Adrian's percussion will beautifully compliment the subtleties of Gen's folksy, jazz inspired voice .

Gen's EP, "Fire from the Sky" is available nationally throughout Australia in any leading music stores as well as iTunes in the digital domain. Scheduled to re-enter the studios for her long-awaited LP, Little's work represents both the culmination of years of development as a musician and the birth of a recording artist and producer destined to leave her mark on the world.

So whatever the weather, bring a friend, a smile, a drum, a blanket or a chair to sit on and a torch to light your way and treat yourself to what is still one of the cheapest and best night out on the Coast.

This month we are featuring some of the wonderful performers from all over the country.

    Lineup:

Ananda Robert: Local singer songwriter with a soul.

SANGEET AND FRIENDS: We are very lucky tonight to be able to present, once again, a true travelling master of his craft and an old friend of Brackets and Jam. Sangeet's music is the ideal accompaniment for an evening on the mountain.

FIRST DRUM JAM: Bring your dancing feet, drum, rattle or whatever and join in our famous and frantic jam.

okapiOKAPI GUITARS...are a Sydney band playing African music ranging from Zimbabwean chimurenga styles to Kenyan classics as well as Tuareg desert blues and Nigerian Afro-beat.

As a band and as songwriters, they have been committed for years to promoting
Third World issues and presenting anti-racist and anti-war messages through their lyrics. Band members have performed African music for over 20 years and have links to the local African community.

They recently played their Zimbabwean-style electric guitar music to the Zimbabwean community in Sydney as support band for the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi during his Australian tour last year.

The Okapi Guitars usually perform as a 4-piece dance music outfit with electric instruments but have also often performed in an acoustic constellation. The members play two guitars, bass and drums. Other recent performances include the National Folk Festival and Coastfest in 2008, and the "Small Day Out" at Girrahween Park (Wolli Creek) in January 2009.

"Excellent, African-pop music that combines a progressive sort of jazzy reggae/island pop with lots of shimmering guitars, clean melodies, dancing counterpoint and rock solid beats.. .Outstanding!"

    (Bryan Baker, GAJOOB magazine)

FINAL DRUM JAM: Stay late and see the evening out with the spirit of the dance and drum! Enjoy a little more space to dance to the powerful beat of the drum.

  • 2791_68867082831_666237831_1592697_6759414_nDespite being a little tired from the previous night's B&J event a good sized group of eager students climbed the mountain last Saturday to learn from master drummer; Pape M'Baye.

Pape's intensive instruction in a rhythm from Guinea was well received and was great fun to perform. It was also great fun to watch Pape's crew of drumers accompany us on the djembe and dun duns. In fact, at one point they were so entertaining that we forgot to drum ourselves.

Pape's worskshops are great fun and I would advise anyone who is interested to take part should they have the chance.

  • certificate_presGreat news for our organisation we have recently received just under $15,000 for the purchase of some generators and expenses for  Brackets and Jam Inc. This is a federal government grant and we were fortunate to have received a proportionally high amount of funds from that allocated to volunteer organisations on the Central Coast.

This grant will add some items that will make life a bit easier for our dedicated volunteers, allowing us greater independance when setting up at festivals and events.

Colette Baron our grants coordinator attended a ceremony at Kulnura where Brackets and Jam were presented with a certificate from our Federal member Craig Thompson.

  • Once again I take great pleasure in stating that Brackets & Jam Central Coast Inc. has had a good year with positive outcomes for the Central Coast community as well as for the organisation. It has not all been smooth riding with a high level of administration being required to support the level of activity undertaken in the past year.

Following is a brief synopsis of different aspects of the operation for the past year and for each aspect, a view of the future direction we hope to take in the following 12 Months (financial year 2008-2009)
